Top At-Home Tips for Healthy Skin

Staying at home is essential for ensuring the health and safety of ourselves, our friends and our family. But for those of us who like to pop to the beauty clinic for facial treatments, it can be hard seeing our skin’s health decline. Rather than risking a trip to Tesco, you can use things within your home and slightly alter your behaviour to see an improvement in your skin’s condition. Please keep reading for our top tips on what you can do at home to keep your skin healthy, bright and smooth. While we might be lost and worried during this uncertain time, creating a schedule for ourselves starting or ending with some beauty care, will help us feel somewhat grounded and normal.

Shower Etiquette

The way we shower can affect the dryness of our skin. If you want to prevent your dry skin from getting worse, then you need to make sure you are following these bathroom tips. If you have severely dry skin, try and limit your showers and baths to five to ten minutes, and use warm rather than hot water. This prevents the steam from drying out your skin, but you need to go a few steps further to fully retain moisture. If you want to see improvement in your skin, then you need to wash your skin in the shower with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Immediately after exiting the shower or bath, you then should apply enough cleanser to remove dirt and oil – avoid using so much that it becomes a thick lather. You should blot your skin gently dry with a towel rather than wiping it, and then finally apply moisturiser. Use Things From the Cupboard By following government guidelines, we should be staying in our homes. While this doesn’t give us the chance to pop to the local Boots or beauty clinic for facials, it doesn’t mean we can’t care for our skin at home. There are many things in the cupboard which can help improve our skin’s look, feel and texture. Bananas are great for moisturising and nourishing our skin. This fruit is perfect when ripe, as it is full of moisture, potassium and Vitamins E and C, which promote clear skin. If you suffer from acne or stress spots, mash a ripe banana and massage it on the skin. Let it sit for a few minutes before washing off. Honey is also a tremendous at-home trick for combination and dry skin types looking for some moisture. Whether you apply it externally or eat it with some toast or tea, honey has amazing benefits for us. Take one teaspoon of honey and massage it into the skin daily. Let it sit on the skin for about 10 minutes before washing off. Pat dry your skin to maximise the benefits. Soon enough, you will see softer, brighter skin!

Eat a Healthy Diet

We might sound like a broken record as a healthy diet seems to be the solution to every problem. But we have added this top tip here because it is true. A healthy diet is vital for promoting clear, smooth skin. Research suggests that a diet rich in fish oil and fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and refined carbohydrates can promote younger-looking skin. If you suffer from acne, dry or wrinkled skin, take a look at your diet and see where you can improve. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water too as this is known to help clear your skin and keep it hydrated.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is an essential step to maintaining your skin’s health while away from the clinic. Exfoliating keeps the skin clean by removing dirt and oil. Sugar is an excellent way to soften and clean the skin. You can use it by mixing the grains with either curd or fresh cream to bring back a glow to even the dullest skin. Leave the mixture on the skin for around 10 minutes before washing away with cold water. Sugar scrubs like this have been used for decades as effective at-home remedies for tired, old skin. Their abrasive nature exfoliates the skin and helps it return to its former soft, smooth appearance. Don’t just exfoliate your skin – you need to take care of your lips too. Create your lip scrub out of coconut oil and raw sugar. Keep the mixture in a little pot and apply it every night generously to your lips and scrub. The coconut oil will hydrate and heal cracked or bitten lips, while the raw sugar’s abrasive nature removes dead and loose skin. If you have any in the house, add some cinnamon to the mixture to act a stimulant, making your lips rosy and plump.
